McLeodganj: The Tibetan Heartbeat
McLeodganj sits about 9 kilometres uphill from Dharamshala's main bus stand, and getting there alone can set the tone for your weekend. Most people take the narrow taxi route through Bhagsunag, past guesthouses and chai stalls stacked along the slope. Once you arrive, the main square, known simply as McLeodganj Market, opens in front of you — flags strung between shops, the smell of momos and yak butter cups drifting from doorways. This is the seat of the Tibetan government in exile, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama's temple complex, Tsuglagkhang, sits at the far end of the square.
